Your EPF can be withdrawn in full once you retire at 55 or later, and whatever you leave in keeps earning interest for three years after you retire, then turns inoperative and earns nothing. The withdrawal is tax-free after five years of continuous service, but interest credited after your job ends may be taxed at your slab, and the separate EPS pension is a monthly amount from 58, not a balance. For Bhavya, retiring with ₹1.1 crore, those three years add about ₹29.5 lakh of interest, and her EPS pension is about ₹4,000 a month.
When does EPF interest stop, and is it taxed?
EPFO restated the rule for EPF interest after retirement in August 2026: retire at 55 or later and interest is credited for three more years, then the account turns inoperative; leave a job before 55 and it is credited until you turn 58 instead. Inoperative does not mean closed: the balance can still be claimed.
An EPF withdrawal at retirement after five years of continuous service, transferred service included, is tax-free; under five years it is usually taxed, as PF withdrawal tax before 5 years works out. In 2017 the Bengaluru bench of the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal held that interest credited after employment ends falls outside that exemption, so it may be taxable at your slab. It is a tribunal's ruling, not a settled rule, but the cautious one to plan on, and because a withdrawal after five years carries no TDS, the interest is yours to declare in your return.
Bhavya at 58: ₹1.1 crore in EPF and 25 years of EPS
Bhavya turned 58 in August 2026 and retired on 31 August from a job paying ₹30 lakh CTC. Her EPF balance is ₹1,10,00,000, and she has been an EPS member since 1 September 2001, 25 years of service.
Holding the FY 2025-26 rate of 8.25% as an assumption (EPFO declares it yearly), a full year adds ₹9,07,500. With interest credited each year for three years, the balance reaches about ₹1.40 crore by August 2029, when she is 61, after about ₹29.5 lakh of interest. A fourth year, once inoperative, earns nothing, where 8.25% would have added about ₹11.5 lakh. The ₹29.5 lakh is all interest credited after her employment ended. Taxed entirely at 31.2% (30% plus 4% cess), it costs about ₹9.2 lakh over the three years.
EPS pays pensionable salary multiplied by years of service, divided by 70. Service before 1 September 2014 counts at the ₹6,500 ceiling and later service at ₹15,000; the ₹25,000 ceiling counts only for service from 17 September 2026, which she does not have.
- 13 years before September 2014: ₹6,500 × 13 ÷ 70 = ₹1,207.14 a month.
- 12 years after: ₹15,000 × 12 ÷ 70 = ₹2,571.43 a month.
- Before weightage: ₹3,778.57 a month.
Because she has 20 or more years of service, EPS adds two years of weightage, worth ₹186 a month counted at ₹6,500 or ₹429 at ₹15,000, so about ₹3,960 to ₹4,210 a month, depending on how EPFO applies it to her record. This assumes her EPS was paid on the ceiling; members who opted for a higher pension on actual wages after the Supreme Court's November 2022 judgment, and whose option EPFO accepted, are paid on actual salary instead.
With at least 10 years of service the pension can start from 50, reduced by 4% for each year short of 58, or be deferred to 60, raised by 4% for each year deferred; the minimum is ₹1,000 a month, before any early-pension reduction.
What does the tax on that interest cost at your income?
In a full year of retirement the ₹75,000 standard deduction covers her pension, so her other income decides the tax. Under the new regime for FY 2026-27, the rebate under section 87A of the 1961 Act makes tax nil up to ₹12 lakh of taxable income. The table shows the extra tax, cess included, on a full year's ₹9,07,500 and over the three years, with today's slabs held.
| Other taxable income a year | Extra tax on ₹9,07,500 of EPF interest | What 8.25% leaves after tax | Tax over the three years |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nil | ₹0 (total under ₹12 lakh) | 8.25% | ₹0 |
| ₹12 lakh | ₹2,35,950 | about 6.1% | about ₹7.7 lakh |
| ₹25 lakh | ₹2,83,140 (30% plus 4% cess) | about 5.7% | about ₹9.2 lakh |
The Senior Citizens' Savings Scheme pays 8.2% for October to December 2026, also taxed at slab, so it nets about 5.6% at ₹25 lakh of other income. A systematic withdrawal from a mutual fund is taxed only on the gain in each payment, as SWP tax on ₹60,000 a month works out. Drawing the money down from 61 is worked in making savings last from 60 to 85.
How do you claim EPF and the EPS pension?
Both claims go through the EPFO member portal with your UAN, linked to Aadhaar and a verified bank account. The final settlement of the EPF balance is Form 19, and the monthly pension is claimed on Form 10D. The claims are separate, so Bhavya can start her pension now and settle the EPF later. The EPF guide covers the years before retirement, from contributions to the 2026 withdrawal rules.
