The cost of raising a baby in its first year in a large Indian city ranges from about ₹1.5 lakh to ₹5 lakh at 2026 prices across the three setups worked out below. Three choices decide where you land: how much of the delivery your health cover pays, who looks after the baby once parental leave ends, and whether vaccines are free at a government centre or paid for at a private clinic. Sahil's year in Pune, worked month by month, comes to ₹4,11,000.
What does a private delivery cost against your maternity insurance?
A private-hospital delivery package in a metro or large city in 2026 runs from under ₹1 lakh for an uncomplicated normal delivery at a smaller hospital to ₹2 lakh or more for a caesarean with a private room at a large multi-speciality hospital. Delivery cost varies by city, hospital category and room type, so these ranges are indicative and the hospital's written package quote is the number to plan on.
Employer group policies pay for maternity up to a fixed limit written in the policy schedule and set by each employer, sometimes higher for a caesarean. Against a ₹1,80,000 bill, a limit of ₹50,000 to ₹75,000 leaves ₹1,05,000 to ₹1,30,000 to pay. Many group policies waive the maternity waiting period, so the cover works from the day you join. Individual policies that include maternity insurance usually make you wait nine months to four years in 2026, longer on some plans, depending on the insurer, so a policy bought once a pregnancy is known will not pay for that delivery.
Check whether the limit covers costs before and after the hospital stay; is company health insurance enough covers a group policy's other limits.
What does a baby cost month by month in the first year?
Sahil earns ₹30 lakh a year, about ₹1,81,400 a month in hand under the new regime for FY 2026-27 with PF on full wages, as worked in CTC vs in-hand salary. His wife is salaried too and takes 26 weeks of paid maternity leave from the birth, the most the Code on Social Security, 2020 allows for a first or second child.
Their Pune hospital quotes ₹1,80,000 for a planned caesarean, including the baby's birth-dose vaccines. His group policy pays ₹60,000 for maternity, which leaves ₹1,20,000. Other baby expenses are their own quotes: ₹40,000 once for a cot, pram and car seat, ₹8,000 a month for nappies, wipes, clothes and toiletries, ₹35,000 over the year for vaccines and doctor's fees at a private clinic, and a daytime nanny at ₹20,000 a month once leave ends.
| Months | What is paid | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Month 1 | Delivery gap ₹1,20,000, gear ₹40,000, supplies ₹8,000 | ₹1,68,000 |
| Months 2 to 4 | Supplies ₹24,000, vaccines and doctor's fees at 6, 10 and 14 weeks ₹27,000 | ₹51,000 |
| Months 5 and 6 | Supplies ₹16,000 | ₹16,000 |
| Months 7 to 12 | Nanny ₹1,20,000, supplies ₹48,000, later vaccines and visits ₹8,000 | ₹1,76,000 |
| First year | ₹4,11,000 |
The year is ₹4.11 lakh, about 2.3 months of Sahil's in-hand pay. More than two-thirds of month 1 is the delivery gap, and from month 7 the nanny is the largest line.
How much does the total change with your choices?
The table sets three setups against in-hand pay of about ₹1,00,700, ₹1,81,400 and ₹2,29,100 a month at ₹15 lakh, ₹30 lakh and ₹40 lakh.
| Setup | First year | Months of in-hand at ₹15 lakh | At ₹30 lakh | At ₹40 lakh |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ₹80,000 normal delivery, ₹60,000 cover, a parent or grandparent at home, government vaccines | ₹1,56,000 | 1.5 | 0.9 | 0.7 |
| Sahil's year | ₹4,11,000 | 4.1 | 2.3 | 1.8 |
| Sahil's year with no maternity cover and a ₹25,000 nanny | ₹5,01,000 | 5.0 | 2.8 | 2.2 |
The vaccine line is the easiest to cut, since the core schedule is free at government centres. The nanny is the line that continues: ₹20,000 a month is ₹2,40,000 in year two before any raise. If one parent stops working instead, the emergency fund guide moves the target for a sole earner with dependants from six months of essential expenses, EMIs included, to nine to twelve. School fees, a later goal, are worked out in saving for school fees.
Which insurance and nomination changes follow the birth?
Add the baby to the group policy through HR within the window it sets after birth, and to any floater of your own at renewal or sooner if the policy allows; the insurance planning guide sizes the floater for a metro family of four at ₹10 lakh to ₹15 lakh in 2026.
A child is also the point to resize term cover. The guide's rule of thumb is 10 to 15 times income, ₹3 crore to ₹4.5 crore at Sahil's ₹30 lakh, excluding any employer group cover.
A bank deposit can carry up to four nominees since 1 November 2025, and with a minor nominee you can name an adult to receive the money until the child turns 18. EPF nominations are updated online on the EPFO member portal. A nominee does not always keep the money, as nominee vs legal heir explains, and a will can also name a guardian for the child.
