PF deduction in salary is 12% of your PF wages (10% in a few notified establishments), and all of it goes into your Employees' Provident Fund account. PF wages are basic plus dearness allowance, plus any allowances and employer PF above half your total pay. Above the ₹25,000 PF wage ceiling, payroll may deduct 12% of your full wages or only of ₹25,000, and on a ₹62,500 basic that moves ₹4,500 a month of your own PF.
Where does the 12% go?
Your 12% EPF contribution earns the rate EPFO declares yearly: 8.25% for FY 2025-26, unchanged from FY 2024-25 (see the EPF guide).
The employer PF contribution is also 12%, but split. For a member of the Employees' Pension Scheme (EPS), 8.33% of wages up to ₹25,000, at most ₹2,083 a month, goes to EPS (more only under the higher-pension option) and the rest to EPF; for a non-member, all of it goes to EPF. The employer pays 0.5% of capped wages for EDLI, a death-in-service cover, and 0.5% for administration. These usually sit in your CTC, part of the gap between CTC and in-hand pay, not in your passbook.
Under the labour codes, total pay in that test includes employer PF, as the breakdown of basic, HRA and special allowance shows. The ceiling has been ₹25,000 a month since 17 September 2026 (₹15,000 before). PF is compulsory only up to it; above it, contribution is voluntary for you and your employer, so you can ask payroll which basis it uses and to limit both shares to the ceiling.
PF on full basic or on ₹25,000: what changes in hand and in EPF?
Farhan's basic, his PF wage, is ₹62,500 a month: exactly half of his ₹1,17,500 gross plus ₹7,500 employer PF, so nothing is added back. That is ₹14,10,000 gross a year and about ₹15.4 lakh CTC with gratuity. He uses the new regime for FY 2026-27; his top slab is 15%.
PF on full basic takes ₹7,500 a month (12% of ₹62,500); on the ceiling, ₹3,000. All ₹4,500 of the difference reaches take-home, since the new regime gives no deduction for his own PF.
The employer's share also falls ₹4,500. With his CTC fixed, the employer pays that back as a taxable allowance: tax at 15% plus 4% cess, 15.6%, takes ₹702 and leaves ₹3,798. In-hand pay rises by ₹4,500 + ₹3,798 = ₹8,298 a month. If his employer keeps the saving, the rise is ₹4,500.
Together the shares put ₹15,000 a month into PF on full basic and ₹6,000 on the ceiling. For an EPS member, ₹2,083 of the employer's share goes to the pension scheme under both choices, so his EPF credit falls ₹9,000 a month, ₹1,08,000 a year before interest.
At higher salaries, on the same structure:
| Basic a month | CTC a year (gross) | Own PF: full basic vs ceiling | In hand rises | EPF credit falls |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ₹62,500 | ₹15.4 lakh (₹14.1 lakh) | ₹7,500 vs ₹3,000 | about ₹8,300 | ₹9,000 |
| ₹1,00,000 | ₹24.6 lakh (₹22.6 lakh) | ₹12,000 vs ₹3,000 | about ₹15,700 | ₹18,000 |
| ₹1,50,000 | ₹36.9 lakh (₹33.8 lakh) | ₹18,000 vs ₹3,000 | about ₹25,300 | ₹30,000 |
Are you in EPS?
Your wage when you first joined EPF decides it. Farhan joined on a basic under ₹15,000, so he is a member. His monthly EPF credit is ₹7,500 + ₹5,417 = ₹12,917 on full basic; ₹3,000 + ₹917 = ₹3,917 on the ceiling.
If you first joined on wages above ₹15,000 between 1 September 2014 and 16 September 2026, or above ₹25,000 since 17 September 2026, you are not in EPS, and the whole employer 12% goes to EPF: total credits of ₹15,000 against ₹6,000 on Farhan's basic, the same ₹9,000 gap. An amendment of 25 September 2026 enrols EPF members left out of EPS whose wages were ₹25,000 or less on 17 September 2026.
Your EPS pension is not a balance in your name. Under EPS 2026, ten years of service brings a pension from 58; with less, you get a fixed-table amount after 36 months without a covered job, or carry the service on a scheme certificate.
To see how the ceiling moves your financial independence year, take your EPF credit fall (₹9,000 for Farhan) off your monthly investment in the FI calculator, add what you invest of the in-hand rise (his ₹8,298) and add what you spend to monthly expenses.
How do I read my PF passbook?
Your UAN (Universal Account Number) links your PF accounts across employers and, once activated on the EPFO portal, shows your passbook. Each month has three columns: employee share, employer share and pension contribution. Only the first two are your EPF balance. Interest is credited once a year, and some employers deposit late, so check that every month appears.
Can I withdraw my PF balance?
Under the EPF Scheme 2026, you can take out 75% right after losing a job and the rest after 12 months without work. Partial withdrawals are allowed after 12 months of membership, leaving a minimum of 25% in the account. A withdrawal before five years of continuous service, counting transferred service with earlier employers, is taxable unless the job ended for a reason beyond your control, such as ill-health or the employer closing or downsizing.
Dhi maps your EPF, with your other investments, to your retirement goal, so a smaller PF credit shows in how far that goal is funded. Dhi nudges you if that goal falls behind; it never mis-sells or earns commissions.
