PF withdrawal tax before 5 years of continuous service falls on your employer's contributions and all the interest, and on your own contributions only if you claimed 80C for them. Each taxable rupee is taxed at the slab of the year it went in, 31.2% with cess for a year in the 30% slab, while a transfer to your new employer's account keeps the tax at nil.

Which parts of PF are taxed if you withdraw before 5 years?

Part of the balance How it is taxed
Employer's contributions As salary
Interest on the employer's share As salary
Interest on your own share As income from other sources
Your own contributions Only to the extent you claimed 80C for them

The 80C deduction (section 80C of the 1961 Act, section 123 of the Income-tax Act, 2025) exists only in the old regime, so in the new regime your own contributions come back untaxed. The tax is worked out for each year the money went in, as if your EPF had never had its tax-free status for those years, and paid in the year you withdraw. Each year's part is taxed at that year's rate.

Ill-health, your employer closing or cutting staff, another cause you did not control, or moving the balance to NPS removes the tax.

How much tax on a ₹9 lakh PF withdrawal at ₹30 lakh CTC?

Kabir is 30, three years into his first job after an MBA, on ₹30 lakh CTC. On the structure in CTC vs in-hand salary, his PF wages are ₹1,22,064 a month, half his total pay, so his PF deduction and his employer's share are ₹14,648 each. He joined in October 2023 on wages above ₹15,000, so he is not in the pension scheme (EPS) and his employer's whole 12% reaches EPF. He has used the new regime every year, on unchanged pay.

After 36 months at 8.25% a year (declared to FY 2025-26, assumed after), worked monthly on the running balance, he has ₹11,96,010: ₹5,27,328 of his own contributions, ₹5,27,328 of his employer's and ₹70,677 of interest on each, ₹1,41,354 in all.

Moving straight to a similarly paid job, he wants a flat down payment. Under the EPF Scheme, 2026 (from 29 June 2026), someone who resigns can take up to 75% of the old account soon after leaving, as a partial withdrawal; the rest needs 12 months without work. For Kabir, 75% is ₹8,97,008.

Of his balance, ₹6,68,682, or 55.9%, is taxable: his employer's share and the interest on both shares. His own ₹5,27,328 is not, because the new regime gave him no 80C. Assuming the 75% comes from each part in the same proportion, ₹5,01,512 of what he takes is taxable. ₹69,088 of that dates from FY 2023-24, when half a year's pay put him in that year's 20% slab, so it is taxed at 20.8%; the other ₹4,32,424 at 31.2%. His tax is ₹1,49,286, 16.6% of what he takes out.

How does the cost change with years, salary and regime?

Years of service 75% he can take Tax, new regime Tax as share of amount taken
1 ₹2,75,577 ₹37,663 13.7%
2 ₹5,73,983 ₹89,634 15.6%
3 ₹8,97,008 ₹1,49,286 16.6%
4 ₹12,46,682 ₹2,17,253 17.4%
5, service continuous 75%; all after 12 months out of work Nil Nil

At ₹40 lakh CTC, three years leave ₹15,94,626; 75% is ₹11,95,969 and the tax ₹2,08,622, 17.4%, higher because his first half-year is in the 30% slab too.

In the old regime, had Kabir counted all his EPF, old job and new, towards the ₹1,50,000 80C limit each year, ₹4,50,000 of his own contributions would be taxable too, and the tax on his 75% would be ₹2,61,772, 29.2% of it.

Beyond the tax, at 8.25% Kabir's ₹8,97,008 left in EPF from 30 would be about ₹82.6 lakh by 58, in rupees of 2054.

How much TDS is deducted, and is that the whole bill?

TDS on PF withdrawal is deducted under section 192A of the 1961 Act when the payment is ₹50,000 or more and service is under five years: 10% of the whole payment if you have given your PAN, 20% without it (since 1 April 2023). On a partial withdrawal like Kabir's, EPFO may deduct ₹89,701, or nothing.

The TDS is a deposit, not the bill. His tax is ₹1,49,286, so after ₹89,701 of TDS he owes ₹59,585 more, or the whole ₹1,49,286 if none was deducted. Advance tax is due when a year's tax after TDS is ₹10,000 or more, so paying it by 15 December 2026, the next instalment date, avoids most of the interest.

How does an EPF transfer online keep the tax at nil?

An EPF transfer online through your UAN (Universal Account Number) moves the old balance into the new employer's account and keeps your service continuous. From October 2028, his five-year mark, anything Kabir withdraws under the scheme's rules is tax-free. The steps are in the EPF guide.

If Kabir leaves the old account alone, his ₹11,96,010 keeps earning interest until he turns 58, but its three years never count towards his five, and interest credited after he left may be taxable, as EPF after retirement explains.

Dhi maps your EPF to your retirement goal with your other investments, so a withdrawal shows in how far that goal is funded. Dhi answers questions like this one from your own numbers and earns no commissions.

Frequently asked questions

No. When your service ends through retrenchment or the closure or downsizing of your employer's business, the balance is not taxable whatever your years of service, so EPFO deducts no TDS on it. Retrenchment also lets you take the whole balance at once rather than 75%.
No. The tax is worked out at the rates of the years the money went in, as if your EPF had not been tax-free then, so taking it during a career break does not lower it. You pay it in the year you withdraw.
Not if your service reaches five continuous years first: transferred to your new account, it comes out tax-free then. Taken after 12 months out of work and before five years, its taxable part bears the same before-5-years tax.
